Have you done a search for free online music? Aol 'free' music leads to a sign up on last.fm and then..... I don't want to know what. I don't want to waste my time with so much nonsense. If free online music was the real offer then where is it? Why all the diversion and mandatory sign ups?

Msn Member 'free' music leads to everything but. I couldn't count all the ads, of all kinds too. Many had nothing to do with music at all.

One Reputable Website

In all my searching and re-searching I did find a reputable and educational website based in the United States: http://kids.niehs.nih.gov/music.htm

Here's a statement right from their site to give you an idea of what they're about:

'NIEHS is a Federal government agency, not a music resource. The music and many other materials appearing on our site were not created by NIEHS and should be presumed to be copyrighted.'

My Take

There are legitimate, free offers out there. I found that they are few and far between. Usually you have to search and dig to find them.

Do yourself a favor, morally as well as legally. Be certain to have the composer's permission for all free music you intend to use beyond your personal, educational purpose. Long and large legal arguments happen every day. Simply explaining 'fair use' could become impossible.

Think about it. How would you like to have any of your hard work taken without permission? More so, making an effort to contact copyright owners could be rewarding. At very least you will have done the right thing and that must feel good. If you do get permission you will know what you can and can't do with someone else's work.

One big possible plus is that you will become known for doing the right thing and could find yourself with opportunities you never thought of. Contacts, joint ventures, and part time jobs are just a few possible outcomes of making an effort to be honest and respectful.
