What's The Real Story With Free Piano Lessons?
Sometimes free piano lessons are a good way to find out about something, or someone's way of doing things. All too often, 'free' is a short, dead end street. For most of my career, I have only taken on new students after a bilateral interview. That would involve talking, playing the piano, and a mini piano lesson. There's never a charge for this, and after answering any final questions, I leave and let people make up their own minds. The point of this free interview is so that people can make an informed decision based on actual experience; not promises. There's nothing worse than spending your time and energy with a hopeful attitude, only to find that what was promised is either inadequate, or leads to endless sales pitches. Before you look for something free consider these questions: - What is the actual quality?
- How much time is involved for how much result?
- Free for how long before payment is required?
- Is there a hidden cost?
- Is it diverting my attention with things like excessive advertising?
The list goes on. You can imagine for yourself. There are other things to consider about anything that appears to be continuously free, especially free piano lessons. Long term sustainability, and good energy levels are two key points to watch out for. If the energy output is high, how could it be maintained for free? Well, sometimes there is support coming from somewhere else. So, a person can volunteer themselves for as long as they want; so long as support is coming from somewhere. If the energy, or shine, is good to start and then drops and stays low, then free is really costing you more. Learning to play piano is a good thing to do. It takes attention and energy on the part of the student as well as the teacher. Now, if the 'free' teacher has low energy, where does that leave the student who has all this work to do? Please don't answer that! I don't really want to imagine that scenario for you. :) So, may all your dealings in life and piano always be a complete circle. It's the only way to sustain what you need.
