Music Scales
Can They Help With Piano Scales?

In a word..........yes.

Music scales also help with a variety of things in music, and on the piano.

It is as if one thing leads to another. Your theory improves, which helps you to recognize melodies, that leads to better improvising, which can lead to composing; and the list goes on.

Of course some people will just concentrate on one aspect like improvising, and use their knowledge of the scales mostly for that.

Getting the 'knowledge part' out of the way helps with a lot of things on the piano. Transferring that knowledge to other musical instruments also happens, seemingly just by consequence.

The great thing about learning scales on the piano is that the keyboard gives a great visual, kind of like a bird's eye view. You can see the entire scale one note at a time, or all at once.

One thing I will say about all the information out there on the Internet. Some websites will put a ton of information on one single page. I would be very careful with that. Even with over 30 years of experience in music, I am sometimes stunned by what I find out there. So, don't let someone else's choice of layout and presentation make you feel overwhelmed. You do not have to learn it all at once. Just take one or two ideas, or scales, and learn them calmly at your own pace.

A lot of the techniques, methods, and ideas presented here at Learn Piano And Shine are transferable to different aspects of music. For example, some ideas on How To Play The Piano can be utilized for learning music scales.

Learning music scales is not only a smart thing to do, but absolutely essential for anyone learning to play the piano. It can be a huge task. So, do a bit each day, or each week for starters.

It's a good idea to get the sound of Major Scales and Minor Scales in your ear, if you haven't already done so, before looking at scale charts.

If you're ready after that friendly warning, Thinkquest.org is one website that appears to have lots of information. Remember to choose what to tackle, and how much.

Whenever you feel stuck, remember this:

Just like a slow trickle of water can flood the basement; a bit of regular practice can flood you with solid music.
