Overcoming Performance Anxiety

Performance anxiety is more common than most of us think it is. Its debilitating power strikes when it counts the most; when you need to be calm and relaxed.

Avoid Crutches

Some people turn to medication. I do not believe in that. I've seen too many good people get hooked on different things. For some it's smoking tobacco, for others it's alcohol or prescription medication. Perhaps the occasional small drink to help you relax or a coffee to boost you is alright. I feel it is better to do without any such crutch, and develop a technique or method to overcome performance anxiety on your own.

Prepare Thoroughly

By far the biggest point in overcoming any anxiety is to be thoroughly prepared beforehand. Nothing instills confidence more than knowing you can do the job thoroughly and properly. One way to do this is to keep notes on your progress with the required performance, and schedule accordingly for necessary practice. You must always be certain that what you are trying to do is within your ability. If it is not, you must allow for the time necessary to improve your ability. For the pianist this would involve lots of technical practice, lots of listening that probably involves reading music repeatedly, and understanding Piano Theory.

Take Small Steps

Many people also mistakenly take steps that are too big. They may have a fair amount of practice and suddenly they head for a big live performance. Try taking a small step like playing for a friend, or a group of people that you are comfortable with. If you can play for a mixed group with a few strangers in the room it will increase the chance for a little anxiety to hit you. Consider it a good practice. A chance to control yourself before the big show.

Dig In

Finally, many mistakes are perpetuated by avoidance. By that I mean skimming over passages that we might not really know all that well. We just get by, or get lucky. A very good way to get over that would be to dig in deep to the keys and get a physical feel for the passage. This will clarify things in your mind in very little time.

Practice Regularly

These few points, practiced regularly, can really help to overcome performance anxiety. Regular practice is the real key.
