Piano Theory
A Blueprint For Playing

Definition

There are various definitions given to piano theory. We will be using it in correlation to music theory. Learning how to read music is extremely useful. Looking at a piano keyboard and being able to play the notes breathes life into the theory of music.

Art and Math

There is an art to theory. There will definitely be some math as well. Be certain to take small steps and understand the mathematical relationships in music. This will make learning more complex things in the future much easier.

Freeing Creativity

A lot of people don't like studying theory. I'd like to share something from my experience that you may want to keep in mind. Having an outline, guideline, and blueprint, will free your creativity; always.

Some Aspects

  • Fundamentals of melody
  • Harmony
  • Rhythm
  • Music notation
  • Musical forms
  • Expression terms

Advanced Theory

Advanced harmony and finer points will mean greater details and multiple musical examples demonstrating the mathematical relationships in music.

Some theory may be abstract, very 'theoretical'; even experimental. I believe it's always better to get a good grip on theory that works. Something that makes good music.

Good Free Sources

An excellent music theory website with lots of free information is: Musictheory.net which has a section called 'Lessons' that teaches about staffs, note duration, scales, compound time, and many other things.

You can customize 'Exercises' to help you firm up your knowledge. And there is even a 'Tools' section with a chord calculator, staff paper generator and more.

For a different view of piano theory you may want to visit Thinkquest.org It is an interesting web site with lots of good free information. Remember to only take steps that are comfortable for you. Have fun exploring. There's a lot there.

FinalAdvice

I like to put my study/preaching into practice. So, after a little theory I practice it on the piano and get used to the sound and the feel. If you only take one point from this page, let it be this one:

Always steer your studying to a practical end.
